Chapter 240: Chapter 167: How to Join Forces Against Stevenson Part 4
Mr. Lawson, however, was somewhat bewildered and asked, "What is this?"
"You could open it and take a look, but as a friendly reminder, if I were you, I wouldn\'t open it, I would accept the previous proposal," David replied.
Lawson\'s expression turned serious, his intuition telling him that the envelope likely contained something detrimental to him.
Yet for him to simply agree to David\'s proposal, that was impossible.
In the end, after a mental struggle, Lawson still took the envelope, opened it, and began to examine the documents inside.
As he took in the contents, his face went from shock, to disbelief, and then to ash.
"Where did you get all these from?" he demanded.
David responded with a lightness in his tone, "There\'s nothing the IRS can\'t find if they want to look!"
After much contemplation, Lawson offered his defense, "This was money spent for official campaign purposes. It doesn\'t count for much, right?"
"Money spent for official campaign purposes?"
David laughed and said, "According to federal law, campaign funds can only be used for campaign-related expenses, but when you went to Henderson City to canvass votes, you stayed in a luxury hotel and drank red wine priced at 5,000 US dollars per bottle. That\'s hard to justify, isn\'t it?"
"Additionally, I think you haven\'t examined it carefully enough. On January 19th, when you went to Reno City, you spent 3,000 US dollars on a Bunny Girl, and this expense was also claimed from the campaign funds."
"Federal law certainly doesn\'t allow for Bunny Girls to be summoned for official purposes, does it?"
"Since the enactment of the Tax Evasion Act, you\'ve embezzled over 70,000 US dollars for your own private desires. According to the Tax Evasion Act, this is a clear case of profiteering, subject to tax. You would owe the IRS over 18,000 dollars in taxes!"
Lawson flipped through the documents in his hands once again, and indeed, the last page recorded his activities on January 19th. Now he truly couldn\'t remain seated.
David was right; staying in luxury hotels and opening expensive wines might be defendable, but how could he justify the matter with the Bunny Girl?
He couldn\'t possibly tell the voters and the public that after a tiring campaign speech in Reno City, he ordered a Bunny Girl to relax his muscles in the evening and conveniently charged it to the campaign funds, claiming it was a legitimate expense.
"Mr. Lawson, as I said earlier, I came here with sincerity. Otherwise, if I did as Governor Stevenson suggested, would you still be able to attend this academic lecture today?" David questioned.
"These documents in your hands, they haven\'t fallen into Stevenson\'s possession, have they?" Lawson inquired urgently.
"What do you think? Of course not!" David answered.
Lawson felt a slight relief upon hearing this; as long as the information didn\'t reach Stevenson, everything was negotiable.
He then replied, "You mentioned joining forces to hit back at Stevenson. I\'m a little interested now. What do you have in mind?"
Lawson knew that if he didn\'t agree, with the information David held, a public revelation would instantly ruin him.
And agreeing to join forces against Stevenson, though it would introduce instability to his current situation, at least he wouldn\'t end up disgraced or in prison.
Being a shrewd man, he would certainly make a calculated decision.
