Chapter 779 - No Regrets (1)
Although he\'d been working for Zhang Jiren for years now, his boss remained unattached to everyone. Of course, he could say that CEO Zhang was a good boss who treated his subordinates well, but he wasn\'t really fond of giving them a second chance whenever they made a mistake.
Zhang Jiren wasn\'t a person who liked cleaning messes done by anyone; this was why he disliked Zhang Liang. The man had seriously caused them several headaches in the past, making Assistant Liu feel sympathy for Zhang Jiren every time Chairman Zhang sent him to clean up after his Zhan Liang.
"Please reschedule my meetings this coming week, and make sure to make preparations. We are going to Beijing," Zhang Jiren instructed after reading the message he received from his wife, informing him about the event they needed to attend together.
No matter how busy he was, Zhang Jiren made sure to make time for Li Meili and her daughter. Since he promised his wife to accompany her to the ceremony a long time ago, he could not fail her this time.
Everything he\'d done for the past year was all for her. There were times Zhang Jiren wondered what kind of life he would have once he divorced Li Meili. Would these feelings he had for her vanish? Would she be able to open her heart to love another man?
Zhang Jiren pushed away these thoughts and resumed working. He had no right to question what his wife would do once they got separated. As for Leyan, he could only hope Li Meili would allow him to see her once in a while.
When he got home that evening, he found his wife seated on the rocking chair inside the nursery room with Little Leyan in her arms. Leyan was crying and unusually cranky today. Li Meili gave her husband a helpless look as she tried to placate her crying daughter.
"She won\'t stop crying," she explained, knowing his unspoken question. "I don\'t know what\'s wrong with her. She slept for three hours straight, and was fed on time but she won\'t cease her crying."
Li Meili was on the brink of breaking down too as she didn\'t know how to deal with her baby anymore. She and Leyan had been like that for an hour now, and there wasn\'t any sign that she would calm down on her own.
Zhang Jiren shed his outer coat, placed it on the couch next to the window and sanitized his hand.
"Give her to me," he told Li Meili who had no choice but to do what had been told. She placed her crying daughter in his arms carefully and stepped back, feeling so useless at that moment.
She was Leyan\'s mother but she felt that she wasn\'t doing a good job of being a parent to her child at all. Li Meili had witnessed it herself how Tang Moyu struggled raising her little buns. She should have known that raising a child on her own would be difficult.
"Hush now, little one. Why are you crying?" Zhang Jiren murmured to the child in his arms before looking at his troubled wife as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Calm down, Meili. Leyan could sense your frustrations. Why don\'t you take a break and drink something. I\'ll look after Leyan for the meantime," he suggested. It was clear that she was close to breaking down.
Li Meili\'s lips quivered, but she didn\'t say anything in return. She only nodded her head in agreement before stepping out of the nursery room, leaving her husband and daughter on their own so she could calm down.
There were times she wondered if she would be able to make it on her own to raise Leyan without Zhang Jiren around. She hated that she was starting to become dependent on him. Once they divorced, she would have to do everything from then on. Unknowingly, she started to feel uncertain about the day when she and Jiren had to part ways.
She went down the stairs to the kitchen and poured herself a glass of cold water. Li Meili didn\'t even notice that she was thirsty and her throat was feeling dry until she took a sip of her drink.
\'You are being stupid again, Meili. You have no right to know what he wanted to do with his life,\' she berated herself. Even if Zhang Jiren met another woman, she had no right to interfere with his life after their marriage ended.
If anything, she hoped that Zhang Jiren would meet a woman whom he could love and pamper for the rest of his life. Li Meili had no doubt that he would be a terrific husband and a good father once he decided to settle down.
That was if Zhang Jiren would be able to fully free himself from the clutches of Zhang Xianzhe. Because even now that he was the CEO of Zhang Corporation, the power balance between him and Zhang Xianzhe wasn\'t stable. A single mistake on Zhang Jiren\'s part would mean losing everything he had worked hard for in the past years.
